Guanacaste Province

6,000 square miles. 400 miles of coastline. Tropical forests, volcanoes and cowboys. Whatever Costa Rica adventure you’re seeking, you’ll find it in Guanacaste.

Located in the northwestern corner of Costa Rica on the Pacific Ocean, Guanacaste is one of the most popular provinces in Costa Rica. Do a quick Google image search and it’s easy to see why. Guanacaste’s unparalleled wildlife, active culture and beautiful beaches make it a must-see destination in Costa Rica for locals and tourists.

Once part of Nicaragua, Guanacaste has a rich cultural heritage. The region once relied heavily on beef cattle ranching and it’s still part of their economy today. You’ll find patches of forest and pastures where Brahman cattle graze under the watchful eyes of sabeneros, the cowboys in the region. The cowboy culture is strong in Guanacaste and topes or rodeos can be found nearly every weekend night during the summer months of February-April.

Nicknamed the “Gold Coast” of Costa Rica, Guanacaste has some of the best surfing spots and beaches in the country. Swimming in crystal clear waters, snorkeling, diving, the options at Guanacaste beaches are endless. And if you want to get out and explore, looming behind the pristine sand, the Costa Rican jungle and volcanoes invite visitors to zip line, raft, hike or horseback ride through its lush tropical paradise. Large swaths of Guanacaste are protected by national parks, reserves and refuges, making it easy for visitors and locals to explore the surrounding wildlife.

Visitors can get to Guanacaste easily through the Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport in Liberia. One of two international airports in Costa Rica, Liberia is the capital of Guanacaste just an hour drive away from Tamarindo and neighboring beach towns.
